By Tomie dePaola
Well, it’s the first day of year 2008. What is it that makes us excited about a new beginning? Is it just that maybe this year will get “IT” better? Is it that all our mistakes, mishaps, wasted days are behind us and we’ll have another chance?
Or is it that we really aren’t taught and encouraged to truly live in the moment and not look “ahead” while each moment rushes by in our lives never to be experienced again? Do we really want to live ONLY in memory?
Now, don’t get me wrong. Memory is fantastic. It can teach, bring us joy, share our past moments – good, bad, exciting and just plain boring – with others. But just as dangerous as only living in the past is to only live looking towards the future.
Years ago, in the ‘60s, the artist Corita Kent made a splash with her serigraph that quoted “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” Sound corny? Well, maybe a bit.
But I’d like to wish for all of you – and myself – the joy and ability to truly live in the moment. Starting right now!
