By Bob Hechtel, with Tomie dePaola
Yesterday as I was standing on Tomie’s studio library roof shoveling snow off of it, a gigantic SUV from Massachusetts pulled into the service driveway. The occupants wanted to talk about Obama. I was surprised that they couldn’t understand that it wasn’t the best time for me to talk about politics. (Anyway, I was preoccupied thinking about Britney Spears, and trying not to slide off of the metal roof.)
Later, still on the roof, I saw a Bulldog walking alone on our heavily-traveled road (“heavily” is a relative word). Ninety minutes later, after several phone calls, we were able to reunite Tank, the Bulldog, with his owner. The owner had recently moved to the area, and had let Tank outside to relieve himself. Tank had apparently decided to check out the neighborhood.
Tuesday is Primary Day in New Hampshire, and what a relief it will be when the day has passed. My favorite television ad supports Hillary Clinton. It’s silent, with the exception of music, and the ending when Hillary Clinton approves of the message. Aside from that ad, it has been non-stop trash-talking.
Tomie is working on a new book project, but he’s struggling with it. Yet, he just told me that he has an idea for the illustrations, but needs the courage to draw it.
Several weeks ago, Tomie started a beard. The itchiness is driving him nuts. Far too many people have told him he looks like Santa Claus, but Tomie would prefer if his beard reminded people of Matisse. So, at the Christmas party eight days ago, I grabbed people as they entered the house. “Don’t tell him he looks like Santa Claus. Matisse, he wouldn’t mind.”
Until next time, best wishes,
Bob Hechtel
