By Tomie dePaola
I have a new name!
It all started when I decided to grow a beard. I’ve grown a full beard several times in my life, but the last time I grew facial hair, it came in (or out) looking like the coat of a calico cat – tufts of white, tufts of “ginger” tufts of dark brown, and grey, and not in any pattern known to God or man.
So, I shaved it off – one more time.
I had a nice brown beard when I lived in San Francisco during the late ‘60s. But I began to look a little like a well-known crazy murderer (whose name will remain unwritten), so I shaved that beard off.
Then in the early ‘70s, when I tried for the third and final time to join the community of Weston Priory, I tried again. When one of the brothers said that I looked like an “old prospector,” I chose the look of “saintly monk” over “Gold Rush drunk.”
Next was the calico cat beard.
It’s been quite a while since I tempted fate – and an itchy face – to grow facial hair. Well, I have, and the itchy phase is almost over. The beard is mostly white with no spots of red hair. I have begun to trim it so that it’ll look more distinguished.
As you know from Bob’s last note, I DO NOT enjoy, “Oh, Santa!” I am attempting to look like Henri Matisse… and oddly enough, I sort of do.
So, I DO have a new name. It is NOT Henri dePaola which really doesn’t have the same ring as…
TOMIE MATISSE. Au Revoir!

By Bob Hechtel, with Tomie dePaola
Tomie (Tommy) Matisse. I love the new name although it sounds a bit lounge singer to me. You know, APPEARING NIGHTLY AT THE MADEIRA CLUB – TOMIE MATISSE!
A recap of the week.
Monday, a day trip to Burlington, Vermont, so that Tomie could meet with one of his lawyers.
Tuesday, the New Hampshire Primary. Although we were satisfied with the results, they certainly were a shock.
Wednesday – Friday, Tomie settled on a style of illustration for his next book. Some of the materials he’ll use are 8 ½ x 11” Avery labels and colored markers.
Saturday, the New England Patriots won. (Tomie couldn’t care less.)
Tomorrow, Tomie will record TOMIE DEPAOLA’S FRONT PORCH TALES & NORTH COUNTRY WHOPPERS for Audible.com. (We are fortunate to have a sophisticated recording studio in our area, so that Tomie doesn’t need to travel to NYC for the taping.)
Also tomorrow, winter returns with a predicted six-twelve inches of snow.
Until next time, best wishes,
Bob Hechtel
