By Bob Hechtel, with Tomie dePaola

The highlight of this week may have been when the mailperson delivered a package from Knudsen’s Caramels (phone 651-388-1970).

Our friend, Anne Taylor Davis, visited Tomie at Christmastime.  She told me that SAVEUR magazine had called Knudsen’s Caramels the BEST caramels.  She told me because they were made in my hometown of Red Wing, Minnesota.

When I visited Red Wing earlier this month, I went to Knudsen’s shop and arranged for caramels to be sent to Anne and Tomie.

I didn’t realize, or had forgotten, that caramels were Tomie’s favorite candy.  He agreed with SAVEUR magazine about Knudsen’s Caramels.

Because the first caramels “disappeared” quickly, I reordered.  The package received this past Wednesday was the second one.

This past Monday, Tomie received the final draft of the manuscript for WHY? (the seventh “26 Fairmount Avenue” chapter book) marked with his editor’s suggestions for illustrations.  Tomie reviewed her notes, added some of his own, and sent the marked up manuscript to the book designer at the publisher in New York City.

The book designer will incorporate the editor’s illustration suggestions with Tomie’s and her own, and prepare layouts for Tomie to use when he illustrates the story.  This process is best described with words and visuals in “Creating the Book” in Barbara Elleman’s acclaimed book, TOMIE dePAOLA, HIS ART & HIS STORIES.  “Creating the Book” features BIG ANTHONY, HIS STORY.

After sending the manuscript for WHY? to the book designer, Tomie continued working on paintings for his Cape Cod gallery show called NEW PAINTINGS.  The show of non-children’s book artwork will open on Saturday, July 29, at the Cove Gallery in Wellfleet, Massachusetts.

The day before, Friday, July 28, Tomie will autograph at the Brewster Bookstore in Brewster, Massachusetts, a few miles from the Cove Gallery.  Tomie has autographed at this store several times over the years.  I’ve always found the summertime Brewster autographings interesting because they’re attended by people vacationing on the Cape from all over the world.

Mrs. Addington’s class at Bonner School knew that Tomie liked to shop.  The students wanted to know what Tomie bought.  For example, this week nine little stools (three each in colors of red, yellow and blue, 9 ½” high) were received from NapaStyle.  Seats for Tomie’s little friends?

Kitchenware, food stuffs and decorations for the house are favorite things to buy.  Folk art, CDs and DVDs are also high on his wish lists.

Scott in Glen Rock, New Jersey sent a letter with a frequently asked question:  “Why don’t you capitalize your d in dePaola?”  The answer is simply, that’s the way his last name is spelled.

Until next time, best wishes,
