By Bob Hechtel, with Tomie dePaola

Let’s see if THIS TIME I can get into a pattern of eNewsletters sent with some regularity!

We returned Monday from a few days on Cape Cod. Last Friday, Tomie signed books at the Brewster Bookstore in Brewster, Massachusetts. The autographing was scheduled for two hours but lasted for over three hours. We were both ready to collapse by the end of the autographing because of the heat and humidity. But, the Brewster folks are very nice, and pizzas are always brought to the back room post-autographing.

Saturday night, Tomie’s show of new non-book artwork opened at the Cove Gallery in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. You can see some of the artwork in the show at www.tomie.com. Enter the site, click BEING AN ARTIST, click NON-BOOK ART, click on the Yellow Hibiscus.

It was a terrific opening. Even nine of Tomie’s classmates from Meriden (Connecticut) High School attended.

After the opening, we went to dinner with the gallery owners and their daughter, good friends Barbara (TOMIE DEPAOLA, HIS ART & HIS STORIES) and Don Elleman, Sherry, Caroline and Steve Litwack, and Steve Y. Dinner was full of story-telling and a little mischief. Put Sherry and Steve’s daughter, Caroline, together with Steve Y. and there’s “trouble.”

While staying in Provincetown, we saw a few celebrities, most notably Collier Strong from “Project Runway.” After several nights of uneven dining, we ended the trip with a wonderful meal at Bistro 404 in Provincetown.

Last Thursday night, we had dinner with Rebecca Doughty. She gave us each copies of her new book, SOME HELPFUL TIPS FOR A BETTER WORLD AND A HAPPIER LIFE. What a great book! The front flap copy reads: “Here are some ever-so-simple (and oh-so-helpful) ideas on how to make the world – your world – a better place!” The first double-page spread: “Begin each day by making funny faces in the mirror.” This is one of those children’s books that can be given to any adult for any occasion.

About ten days ago, Tomie’s Lead Editor, Nancy Paulsen, and her husband, David Friend (of VANITY FAIR) visited. Tomie and Nancy worked non-stop on the second draft of the next “26 Fairmount Avenue” chapter book, FOR THE DURATION. David spent his time relaxing at Tomie’s pool, on Tomie’s deck, and in Tomie’s house while working on his projects. It’s funny having two New Yorkers in residence for a few days. Cell phone calls, text messaging and Blackberry communications are the norm… even between the two of them!

We’ve begun to invite artists to submit drawings for the Tomie.com Splash Page. The artist Zelda created the artwork for the July Splash Page. The artist Erin has created artwork for August, and the artist Noelle is creating artwork for September. Artists are encouraged to submit their horizontal drawings, with their age, and hometown to my home address:

Late this spring, I created a new website: www.everythingtomie.com. I’ve been slow to add the “yard sale” items, but I eventually will.

Until next time, best wishes,
