By Bob Hechtel, with Tomie dePaola

This is encouraging. Another eNewsletter written days, and not months, after the last eNewsletter.

I’ve been re-doing Tomie’s gardens. As I was working on Flower Bed #6 on Saturday, the quiet of the day was interrupted by oom-pah music and sirens. There was a parade in town: the annual New London Hospital Day parade. Although the parade route was short, the oom-pahs and sirens seemed to last forever. I imagined the parade to be only several oom-pah bands and blaring fire trucks.

Later that day, Estelle Guralnick and her daughter, Margot Guralnick, came for dinner with Margot’s husband, Ted Conover. Estelle is responsible for the COUNTRY HOME and BOSTON GLOBE photo spreads of Tomie’s homes years ago. Margot writes for TRAVEL & LEISURE and Ted is an author (www.tedconover.com). Estelle has been scouting Tomie’s home for another project, with Tomie’s blessings.

Friday night, Jarrett and Gina Krosoczka joined Tomie for dinner. Jarrett is a dynamic, young creator of books for children (www.studiojjk.com) who Tomie met at conference for SCBWI (www.scbwi.org). They’re expecting their first child. Gina’s cravings include PEZ and cotton candy. It was Gina’s good fortune, and Jarrett’s too, that New London’s town green featured a carnival midway. As they left town, I don’t doubt Jarrett stopped for cotton candy. He said he keeps a stash of PEZ in the car, just in case.

During the late spring, Tomie had cataract surgeries. Both eyes are now fully healed, and he’s thrilled. While Tomie was in the eye doctor’s office one of the many visits to the eye doctor, and I was in the waiting room, a woman came into the waiting area, and saw a friend and exclaimed, like a child, “I can see! I can’t believe how well I can see!” I didn’t know that there was this world of folks, of a certain age, having cataract surgeries by the hundreds, and seeing well for the first time in years. It was fascinating to watch all of these happy people.

Tomie is working on a funny Thanksgiving story, at the suggestion of his editors. It’s been a bit of a struggle although he now has a pretty good idea of the storyline. Putting pencil to art paper is another matter…

For all of you fans of the worst in reality television: “The Real Housewives of Orange County” was bad. “The Real Housewives of New York City” was worse. But the worst is yet to come: “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Drama, drama, drama (pronounced just like “bama” in Alabama).

Tomie’s is answering questions at www.barnesandnoble.com this week (Monday – Friday). Click BOOK CLUBS in upper right, Click FAMILY ROOM WITH TOMIE DEPAOLA under Announcements.

Until next time, best wishes,
