By Bob Hechtel, with Tomie dePaola

It’s raining. Correction: It’s pouring. Just another day in New Hampshire.

Yesterday we drove for seven hours, to and from, Niskayuna, New York. Tomie spoke at the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center. Fifty years ago, at age 23, Tomie painted a mural on the wall at the front of the Chapel, and yesterday the anniversary was celebrated as Tomie spoke about the making of the mural, and later autographed books.

I think what delights Tomie most about the mural is that it looks as good today as it did after he finished work on it fifty years ago. He learned the process of true fresco well as a student, and applied the techniques correctly.

The mural was Tomie’s first major commission. It depicts the following women: Saint Rose of Lima, Blessed Jane of Aza, Saint Catherine of Siena, the Holy Mother, Saint Catherine de’Ricci, Saint Mary Magdalen and Saint Maria Goretti. These women are especially important to the Dominican Sisters of Saint Catherine de’Ricci.

Even if these women don’t speak to you in a significant way (and they don’t to me), the mural is still worth seeing. It is the third time I’ve had the opportunity to see it, and I’d forgotten how stunning it was.

If you don’t live near Schenectady, New York, and cannot visit the Center, you can get an idea of the mural online: www.dominican-spiritual-life-center.com, click Tour Our Facility on left, click Chapel and Chapel Mural to see photographs of the mural.

Tomie spoke for an hour, and autographed for nearly two. A very nice day.

On Saturday, Tomie autographed at our local bookstore, Morgan Hill Bookstore (603-526-5850), for the summah people. This Morgan Hill autographing was a bit different in that it was covered by Italian TV. A correspondent and videographer representing an Italian television station interviewed Tomie for about twenty minutes, and then filmed the autographing. If only Boston-area retired teacher Elizabeth Masucci had attended. She may have been discovered, and started a new career as an actress in Italy!

Saturday evening we went to dinner with the bookstore owners, Peggy and Connie, as is custom after an autographing. This time, we tried the re-opened Home Hill Inn Restaurant in Plainfield, New Hampshire (www.homehillinn.com), and were pleased that we had.

Tomie’s editor, Susan, sent him her comments regarding the second draft of the manuscript for FOR THE DURATION, the eighth “26 Fairmount Avenue” chapter book. Today, he is reviewing her notes, and making changes to the manuscript. Last week, he finished an illustration for the cover, and the book designer created a design for the book’s cover.

Tomie has warned me that he will probably become quite cranky by tomorrow. Because he will be having a medical procedure on Wednesday, he has been off ibuprofen for several days. He aches everywhere.

The artist Erin drew the illustration for the August Splash Page at tomie.com. We had assumed that she had drawn a cat. However, we learned today when we saw her father that she had drawn a cougar. Ah-huh. We stand corrected.

Until next time, best wishes,
Bob Hechtel
