HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TOMIE! (Today.) HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BRONTË! (September 13.)

Tomie is in the Los Angeles area taping a program about the craft of writing and illustrating for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. As he prepared for the taping, on Saturday, he had his hair cut by William (apparently my buzz cuts aren’t good enough for the “big” screen), and he visited the hotel spa (thanks to a birthday gift from his editorial Team Tomie).

The star sightings at his hotel that I’ve remembered: Shia LaBeouf (“edgy looking”) and KC (“heavy looking”) of KC and the Sunshine Band.

No one has mistaken Tomie for Santa Claus or Henri Matisse. But, the hotel manager sent Tomie a personal note upon check-in because he recognized Tomie’s name on the hotel register and loved Tomie’s books as a child.

I picked up a virus Friday night: a computer virus. I’m rather amused that my virus program alerted me to the virus, but couldn’t wipe it off my computer, and my back-up memory stick wouldn’t read in my other computer.

Yet, this is just an annoyance compared to the real problems folks along the Gulf Coast are experiencing. I can’t imagine.

One week ago this past Saturday, we decided to organize and clean Tomie’s painting area (which is not the children’s book illustration area). We found six paintings that we didn’t know were there among the unpainted canvases. (All the more reason to work harder and faster on the new artwork inventory lists.) The six paintings are now in a safe and logical location: New London Gallery.

An eNewsletter reader recently wrote to suggest that I post the newsletter on a blog with photos. It’s a great idea, and the next eNewsletter will also be available in a photo-enhanced edition on a blog site. Details to come.

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art (www.picturebookart.org) is holding a Butterfly Auction of original artwork. Tomie’s art features Strega Nona with a butterfly. Check it out.

Until next time, best wishes,
