I hope you had a pleasant Thanksgiving.

Tomie spent the day working on illustrations for his pop-up book, BRAVA, STREGA NONA. I think he’ll be done with the illustrations for the book this coming week.

We had snow last Tuesday. Four inches were predicted, but we received less. Most of the snow has melted, and I hope the rest will melt this week.

I thought you might enjoy reading the “Tomie dePaola Day” Proclamation, so here it is…

A Proclamation

TOMIE DEPAOLA DAY
OCTOBER 27, 2007

WHEREAS, Tomie dePaola loves life; and

WHEREAS, Tomie dePaola understands that being an artist is not only what you do, but how you live your life; and

WHEREAS, Tomie dePaola has written and illustrated 117 books, and illustrated another 121 books, that celebrate family, diversity, different cultures, and chicken feet; and

WHEREAS, Tomie dePaola has made a difference in the lives of children and adults throughout the world with his life’s work; and

WHEREAS, Tomie dePaola has encouraged the children of New Hampshire to read by accompanying former Governor Jeanne Shaheen to Read Across America events and by participating in Scholastic Read events with New Hampshire’s First Lady, Dr. Susan Lynch, and by his yearly summer reading programs at New London’s Tracy Library; and

WHEREAS, Tomie dePaola and his work have been honored with recognitions such as the Caldecott Honor Award, the Newbery Honor Award, the Smithson Medal from the Smithsonian Institution, and an honorary degree from Georgetown University, among many others; and

WHEREAS, Tomie dePaola was selected in 1999 for the New Hampshire Governor’s Arts Award of Living Treasure; and

WHEREAS, Today, Tomie dePaola is honored with the 2007 Sarah Josepha Hale Award; and

WHEREAS, Tomie dePaola loves New England, especially New Hampshire, his home state for nearly 35 years, especially during the fall, his favorite time of the year;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOHN H. LYNCH, Governor of the State of New Hampshire, do hereby proclaim October 27, 2007 as TOMIE DEPAOLA DAY in New Hampshire and congratulate Tomie dePaola on his many achievements, and his contributions to his readers, the State of New Hampshire and his community.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Concord, this 24th day of October in the year of Our Lord two thousand and seven, and the independence of the United States of America, two hundred and thirty-two.
