By Bob Hechtel, with Tomie dePaola

Last night, I returned from Minnesota where they had a winter storm on Saturday (note that the Hyundai Azera, my rental car, doesn’t perform well in the snow). Today, we’re having a winter storm in New Hampshire. Joy.

On Wednesday of this past week, as I traveled to Minnesota, Tomie went to the Penguin Sales Conference in Greenwich, Connecticut. Robert Sabuda and Tomie gave the Penguin Young Readers Group sales representatives a peak at the BRAVA, STREGA NONA pop-up spreads. Tomie also read from TOMIE DEPAOLA’S FRONT PORCH TALES & NORTH COUNTRY WHOPPERS. Each time Tomie reads from the book, his accent gets thicker and thicker. He may not qualify as a local or a native, but he’s beginning to sound like one.

One more week of work on the illustrations for the pop-up, and Tomie’s work should be done. Then, it’s up to the Penguin art department and Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart’s studio to “make it work.”

After Tomie’s presentation at the Sales Conference, he had a chance to talk with his editors (that’s plural). This past summer, Tomie chose to end an editorial relationship that had lasted over 40 years. So, he’s now going to work with four of the editors at G. P. Putnam’s Sons (of the Penguin Young Readers Group). I call them Team Tomie.

It was decided that the first project Tomie would undertake after completing work on the pop-up would be a new “26 Fairmount Avenue” chapter book. It will become Book 8 in the series.

Before I left for the airport on Wednesday, I called Tomie, as he was being driven to Connecticut, to tell him that the appliance repairman had just explained to me that Tomie’s dryer was problematic, and that he might want to get a new one. Tomie was thrilled! He knew exactly which dryer he’d get. Ah, simple pleasures.

Maybe I should tell him the truck needs to be replaced, too. How excited would he get?!

He has determined his menus for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The date for his Christmas party has been scheduled. Reservations at the Old Courthouse Restaurant (Newport, New Hampshire) have been made for New Year’s Eve (entertainment provided by a band whose singer’s day job is with the U.S. Department of Justice). December is getting a bit too organized. Plans are bound to go awry. I’ll keep you posted.

Until next time, best wishes,
Bob Hechtel
