Well, dear friends, this past Thursday I finally finished the final art for BRAVA, STREGA NONA: A MAGICAL POP-UP BOOK. I’m doing the project with Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart, the two “princes of the pop-up.” It’s been a very interesting and challenging project, and everyone, including me, is happy with the results so far. Publication date is November 13, 2008, so, if I didn’t have other things to get busy with, with my new team of editors, I’d be checking off the days on the calendar.

But, no rest for the wicked (and yes, I was a little bit wicked a few times in my life). This coming week I’m going to start work on some new projects which I won’t tell you about yet!

Some sadness entered my life this past week. My dear, crazy, loveable friend, Alice Ann Biggerstaff, had a stroke. Alice Ann was my Santa Fe angel, carting me around and showing me incredible places. She was a wonderful artist and shared her love of folk art with me. I write about her in “A Santa Fe Christmas” in my book CHRISTMAS REMEMBERED. She’s not doing too well. I just hope the end is peaceful and calm if that is to be.

Well, Bob Hechtel and I are getting ready to shift into high gear for Christmas. I want to keep a short diary of our activities that I can post.

Best to all – and oh yes, my menorah is burning brightly!

Tomie

That was a nice surprise that Tomie wanted to write for the eNewsletter.

On Monday, December 10, there should be an article about Tomie in THE BOSTON GLOBE. I’m going to check www.boston.com tomorrow to see if it’s posted online.

If it IS posted online, I should get a Google Alert announcing that the words “tomie depaola” appear online in a new article. You can set up a Google Alert, too, for just about any words. www.google.com/alerts

Yesterday, I was reminded of Tomie’s January 2007 interview at the University of New Hampshire. It’s still online, and a lot of fun. See Tomie in his French Architect look.

We had a terrific time in Concord, Massachusetts yesterday at the Concord Museum. Each December, the Museum celebrates children’s literature with their FAMILY TREES display. This year, nearly 30 trees are decorated in a style inspired by children’s books. Two trees were inspired by THE LEGEND OF THE POINSETTIA and THE KNIGHT AND THE DRAGON. Both were spectacular. The woman who decorated THE KNIGHT AND THE DRAGON tree started working on the decorations in July.

Tomie presented for about 45 minutes, and then autographed his books. The audience was very receptive. Prior to the program, we had a chance to spend time with Tomie’s mother’s best friend’s daughter, Joan, and her daughter, son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter, sweet Rosie.

On Wednesday of last week, Tomie spoke, and autographed, at our local library. Several readers of this eNewsletter attended, including Nancy and her daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren, Dominic, Colette and Madeleine. We hadn’t seen Nancy since she quit working at the restaurant at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. Her grandson was full of questions, such as, how do you make the cover for a book.

So, travel is ovah for 2007!

We learned last week that Tomie will record TOMIE DEPAOLA’S FRONT PORCH TALES & NORTH COUNTRY WHOPPERS for audible.com in January 2008. The more Tomie reads the stories in FRONT PORCH TALES, the thicker his accent becomes. So, the recording should be very funny.

If you can’t find Tomie’s books at your local bookstore, don’t forget that OUR local bookstore has the largest selection of Tomie dePaola’s books in the world. Morgan Hill Bookstore @ 603-526-5850.

Until next time, best wishes,
Bob Hechtel
