I started a new big painting yesterday. It will be of the Virgin and Child.
I haven’t done a big painting in a while. The last one was of Mary and her lamb for the exhibition at the Library Arts Center in Newport, New Hampshire which accompanied the Sarah Josepha Hale Award festivities. I was going to “highlight” that painting in my “Great Room” for Christmas.
Previously I had three fairly large paintings in there: a big watermelon, a big peach and a painting of Frida’s Casa Azul – blue house. When they went off to the exhibition, I had a thirty plus foot white wall to deal with.
So, I took some tall zinc vases with willow twigs in them, that had been on both sides of the doorway to the outside, and placed them on the “ledge” that runs the length of the wall. (The paintings were on the ledge too instead of hanging on the wall. The ledge is about three feet from the floor.) Then I placed some of the dried pomegranates that are around the house in groups as well. It looked fine. It looked different.
I liked what Bob said. He likened it to a Pratt Institute art problem: re-decorate the room with only stuff in it, nothing added.
For Christmas, I decided not to put the three big colorful paintings back, but to feature Mary and her lamb. That ended today when I started an even bigger painting than Mary and her lamb.
I guess it’s “artistic anxiety,” doing something with big brushes to make up for all the minutia of the pop-up art.
I’ll let you know how it turns out.
