My dear friend, Alice Ann Biggerstaff, has died. She lived in Santa Fe and had a terrible stroke a week or so earlier. The prognosis wasn’t that good, and I thought wonderful Alice Ann wouldn’t like it at all that she couldn’t go to the Flea Market at the Santa Fe Opera site or visit the pueblos or have lunch with friends at “the Shed.”

Enough said.

Alice Ann worked at Hallmark and was a wonderful artist and designer. She met Alexander Girard and his wife when they came to Kansas City to give a Design Workshop. She was intimately involved with the Girard’s Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe, and decided that when she retired, it would be in “the city different.”

I met Alice Ann just a short time before she “retired” from Hallmark. Just like the Girards and Milton Glaser, etc., I gave a weeklong workshop at Hallmark. So, when Alice Ann sent me a card suggesting I come to Santa Fe to see remarkable folk art, how could I refuse.

I won’t go into details here. (Maybe it will be a memoir – Alice Ann and Tomie – who knows.) I do write about the Christmas I spent there in my book CHRISTMAS REMEMBERED.

I’ll always remember Alice Ann. She was one of LIFE’S true originals.

I’ll really miss her phone answering message (her friends will know what I mean): “Buenos Dias, this is Alice Ann. I’m not here. Leave a message. Mr. Boo, the kitties and I love you. This is Alice Ann. Adios.”

Yes indeed!! Adios, and Buenos Nuevo Dias, Alice Ann.
