By Bob Hechtel, with Tomie dePaola
Another day, another snowstorm. I’m beginning to think I won’t get the leaves raked, and the lawn mowed, before the end of the year.
Just in case you don’t subscribe to THE DAILY JOURNAL in Kankakee, Illinois, here are Tomie’s answers to questions asked him by children in the Kankakee area, and published in THE DAILY JOURNAL on November 15, 2007.
WHAT ARTIST INSPIRED YOU MOST AS A CHILD?
My art teacher, Mrs. Beulah Bowers, and a lady who did illustrations for CHILDREN’S PLAY MATE MAGAZINE, Fern Bisel Peat.
WHAT WRITER INSPIRED YOU MOST AS A CHILD?
I wasn’t inspired by one writer. But, I was inspired by all of the legends and folk tales read to me by my mother, and the legends and folk tales I eventually read by myself.
HOW DO YOU CONCENTRATE WHEN YOU ARE WRITING YOUR BOOKS?
It’s something I learned how to do, but it’s very difficult.
DID YOU WRITE A LOT OF STUFF DOWN WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP SO YOU COULD REMEMBER IT FOR A BOOK?
No, I didn’t. But I have a very good memory. My readers will learn why I didn’t write things down in a future “26 Fairmount Avenue” chapter book.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO WRITE TOMIE DEPAOLA’S FRONT PORCH TALES & NORTH COUNTRY WHOPPERS?
I wanted to celebrate Upper New England storytelling, and the old farmers and their families who are quickly disappearing.
ARE THERE GOING TO BE ANY MORE BOOKS IN THE “26 FAIRMOUNT AVENUE” SERIES?
Yes. Three or four. I haven’t decided how many more there will be.
I JUST READ THE TWO NEW “26 FAIRMOUNT AVENUE” BOOKS. HOW MUCH DID THE WAR CHANGE YOUR LIFE?
World War II changed everyone’s life in the USA, Asia and Europe. It truly was a world war. I’m against all wars probably because of living through the Second World War.
But, we also did normal things, too, while there was war. We still went to school, and church, and got together with family and friends.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CHILDREN?
No. But, I have a 3-year-old Airedale dog named Bronte.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?
Cooking, watching movies and, of course, reading. My hobby is not making art because that’s my job.
DO YOU COME TO CHICAGO A LOT?
No, I don’t. I really like Chicago and would like to visit it more often.
HOW DOES IT FEEL FOR YOU TO MEET OTHER FAMOUS PEOPLE?
I found out a long time ago that famous people are just people after all.
DO YOU REMEMBER HOW YOU FELT WHEN YOUR FIRST BOOK CAME OUT?
I feel the same way when every book is first published. I’m very, very happy.
Until next time, best wishes,
Bob Hechtel
