Tomie decided he should rock long hair. Until. Tomie was stopped, maybe for speeding, on a New Hampshire interstate in his top-down Saab convertible. The state police patrolman approached the vehicle, and Tomie, from the rear, and began, “Ma’am…” The hair was trimmed several days later. Photos by Jock McDonald, 1990. (Bob)

We attended Don and John’s Titanic costume party in Charleston, SC, one year. Tomie’s costume was that of an old Italian woman traveling in steerage. She had brought food for the journey in a basket: stale bread, olive oil, and sausage. Although this was a costume party, many of the pretty people instead wore tuxes and fancy dress. After we arrived at the party, it became clear to Tomie that the pretties wanted nothing to do with him/her. So, he intentionally went from group of pretties to group of pretties (as a cat jumps onto the lap of the one person in the room who is uncomfortable with cats). As they saw the obviously deranged woman approaching, and speaking with an Italian accent, they scattered. What fun he had! (Bob)

REMEMBERING TOMIE with his own sympathy card design. I think the design was done in the late 1950s. (BTW, for those of you who have seen me post on Tomie’s Facebook page, I am no longer allowed access to his page because it is now a “memorialized” page.) (Bob)

Liz and David Shanks gave Tomie marionettes of his favorite characters: Strega Nona, Tomie, and Big Anthony. They presented the marionettes to Tomie at the 75th birthday party in NYC that Penguin threw for Tomie. David Shanks was, at the time, CEO of Penguin Group (USA) Inc. And, the photo gives me the opportunity to link to a recent post by Liz featuring PETOOK: AN EASTER STORY, by Caryll Houselander. http://www.lizsbooksnuggery.com/2020/04/birth-rebirth-resurrection-perfect-picture-book-holy-week/ (Bob)
