REMEMBERING TOMIE on September 12, 2020
Ben Shahn was born on September 12 in 1898. Tomie admired his work, and studied with him during the summer of 1955 at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in Maine. Skowhegan’s summer programming was less than ten years old when Tomie was there.
Ben Shahn told Tomie that being an artist “is not only what you DO, but how you live your life.” The comment had such an impact on Tomie that he often repeated it. (Bob)
