Although Tomie didn’t get credit for it on the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com), he was also “in” the 1998 rom-com, “You’ve Got Mail,” with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. (Bob) Pray for Peace, Justice, and Equality.
REMEMBERING TOMIE on June 10, 2020
Tomie created front cover and interior illustrations for “With Warmest Regards” in 1995. The book featured the recipes of customers at Dayton’s (Twin Cities), Hudson’s (Detroit), and Marshall Field’s (Chicago). Tomie traveled to Minneapolis often for book signings, work with the Dayton Hudson Corporation, Children’s Theatre Company, and the University of Minnesota, and was frequently featured in newspapers and on television and radio. I used to boast that he was so well known in Minneapolis that a family once noticed him shopping in the men’s underwear department in Dayton’s. As I now reflect, it’s odd that I would think that recognition would make the ultimate statement about his popularity. (Bob) Pray for Peace, Justice, and Equality.

The children’s librarians’ section of the New Hampshire Library Association asked Tomie to design materials for the statewide summer reading program of 1995, “Saddle Up a Good Book.” Twenty-five summers later, I wonder if New Hampshire libraries will even be able to have reading programs. Sarah Mackenzie and Tomie were going to present a program in August for New London’s Tracy Memorial Library as part of their summer reading program. (Bob)
